Quick answer

The SSB interview is a 5-day selection process for the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. Day 1 is screening (intelligence test and picture perception), Day 2 is psychology tests, Days 3 and 4 are group tasks and the personal interview, and Day 5 is the conference where assessors announce the result.

Whether you come through NDA, CDS, AFCAT or another entry, the Services Selection Board tests who you are, not just what you know. This guide explains each day so you know what to expect.

SSB interview process: day-wise

DayWhat happens
Day 1Reporting, documentation, Stage 1 screening: Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test and Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT)
Day 2Psychology tests: Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), Word Association Test (WAT), Situation Reaction Test (SRT) and Self Description (SD)
Day 3 and 4Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks and Personal Interview
Day 5Conference and announcement of the result

Candidates who do not clear Stage 1 on Day 1 are sent back; only screened-in candidates continue to Stage 2.

The tests in detail

OIR and PPDT

OIR checks verbal and non-verbal reasoning. In PPDT you view a picture, write a story and then discuss it in a group.

Psychology tests

TAT, WAT, SRT and SD reveal how you think, react and see yourself. There are no right or wrong answers, so honest, positive and practical responses work best.

GTO tasks

Group discussion, group planning exercise, progressive group task, half group task, individual obstacles, command task, lecturette and final group task test teamwork, initiative and leadership.

Personal interview

A trained interviewing officer talks to you about your background, interests, current affairs and goals to judge your officer-like qualities.

Officer-like qualities (OLQs) assessed

Assessors look for confidence, determination, courage, responsibility, cooperation, initiative, self-discipline and leadership across the whole process.

How to prepare for the SSB interview

  1. Know your own life story, strengths and weak points clearly.
  2. Practise PPDT, TAT, WAT, SRT and SD in timed settings.
  3. Follow current affairs and basic defence knowledge.
  4. Improve physical fitness, since the GTO tasks need stamina.
  5. Practise group discussions and lecturettes, and get feedback from mentors.

NDA aspirants should also read the NDA exam pattern, because the SSB carries 900 of the 1800 final marks.
