India’s Defence Production Soars to Record ₹1.51 Lakh Crore in FY25: Defence Update for NDA Exam Preparation (11 August 2025)

Latest Defence News

India’s defence manufacturing has achieved an unprecedented milestone in Financial Year 2024-25, with annual production reaching ₹1,50,590 crore—an all-time high. This remarkable achievement represents a robust 18% growth compared to the previous fiscal year’s output of ₹1.27 lakh crore and a staggering 90% surge since FY 2019-20, when production stood at ₹79,071 crore.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced this landmark achievement, crediting the Department of Defence Production, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), public sector manufacturers, and private industry for their collective efforts. He termed the upward trajectory as a “clear indicator of India’s strengthening defence industrial base”.

The production breakdown shows DPSUs and other public sector undertakings contributed approximately 77% of total production, while the private sector contributed 23%—an increase from 21% in FY 2023-24. This growth reflects the private sector’s expanding role in India’s defence ecosystem, with both segments demonstrating consistent year-on-year growth. The overall production of DPSUs increased by 16% while the private sector grew by an impressive 28%.

Adding to this success, India’s defence exports also reached a record high of ₹23,622 crore in FY 2024-25, marking a 12% increase from the previous year’s ₹21,083 crore. This achievement underscores India’s transformation from a major arms importer to a growing global defence exporter under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

NDA Exam Relevance

This historic defence production milestone is highly relevant for NDA aspirants as it demonstrates India’s strategic shift toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing. For NDA exam preparation, this development connects to several important topics including economic policies, national security, government initiatives like Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, and India’s defence capabilities. The 90% growth since 2019-20 showcases the success of policy reforms and indigenisation efforts, which are crucial topics for current affairs sections and SSB interviews.

Understanding such developments helps NDA candidates grasp India’s evolving defence landscape, technological advancement, and strategic autonomy—all essential for both written exams and personal interviews.
